The 2018 growing season was a season of contrasts. The winter (2017) was very dry; June was the driest June on record. We followed our normal practice of pruning quite late to help avoid spring frosts at Koomooloo. As has been the case in the last decade, the seasonal patterns are showing quite a bit of variability – so the spring rains didn’t arrive until November/December. The season was warm and dry from January until harvest. The soils at Koomooloo are deep and have good water holding capacity, so even with low rainfall we still produced an excellent, balanced crop. Yields were moderate, with quality potential excellent. The fruit was picked from a range of blocks at Koomooloo Vineyard. Twenty percent whole bunch, 80% destemmed open two-tonne fermenters. Each variety fermented separately. Both pumped over irrigation and plunged depending on varietal, left on skins for 24 days and then pressed. Only lighter pressings included.
"Deep bright purple/red colour. Very fragrant intense berry fruit aroma with fine integrated oak adding complexity. The blend of the four varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Franc) add complexity to both the aroma and flavour. The wine has power but maintains its poise. The tannins are very soft and integrated supporting the powerful fruit weight. The wine has a lovely fruit vibrancy and length of flavour. Excellent drinking now but will benefit with further ageing. 10-15years careful cellaring." PS
