"32% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 35% Shiraz and 12% Cab Franc. As the name suggests, it takes a lot of components to make a Self Made-Up Man, and here the winemaker demonstrates what it means to craft wines of success. The shiraz steps forward with raspberry, pomegranate, cherry and blackcurrants. Allspice, cardamon, cedar and boot polish follow. Grainy tannins sit upfront and acidity rolls on. In 2019 we experienced a dry winter on the back of a dry 2018. Spring was warm with little rain, setting us up for another compressed harvest. In the vineyard focus was to ensure vines evaded the effects of heat stress; loose canopies to allow shading and judicious watering where possible. Due to the lack of rain throughout the season we experienced lower than normal crops, however quality was ensured with small berries and intensity of flavour across the board. A great year. The fruit was picked from a range of blocks at Koomooloo Vineyard. Twenty percent whole bunch, 80% destemmed open two-tonne fermenters. Each variety fermented separately. Both pumped over irrigation and plunged depending on varietal, left on skins for 24 days and then pressed. Only lighter pressings included.
